 AUSTIN - LEE MAKES IT THREE
The Midland Lee Rebels collected their first-ever threepeat against Austin Westlake in
front of some 32,000 fans. Cedric Benson led the maroon and gray offensively, while
the Reb defense took away any Chap chances of getting back in the game throughout the
second half of the Class 5A Division I state final held in UT's Darrell K Royal - Memorial
Stadium.Westlake drew first blood, taking the
opening kick-off and mounting an 80-yard scoring drive. Benson answered back for the
Rebels with a 46-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7-7. Both teams would
exchange scoring drives to send the state finalists into the locker room tied at 21 all.
Questionable play-calling by the Chaps in the second half
would prove to be their demise, as Lee started to dismantle the Westlake defense and chew
up the game clock. The Rebels - Benson - would score once in the third and again in
the fourth to claim their third straight state title. Benson carried the ball 40
times for 246 yards, and scored all five of the Rebel touchdowns in the victory.
