SAN
ANTONIO, TX - A day of turnovers spelled defeat for the Mojo in the
afternoon game of the H-E-B Texas Football Classic. After taking a
21-0 lead to the locker room, the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs denied a
second-half Odessa Permian comeback and went on to a 21-13 victory in
San Antonio's Alamodome.The Dawgs
scored first, late in the first quarter, on a six-play, 73-yard drive.
On the following possession, Permian mounted a 64-yard drive down to the
Copperas Cove 9-yard line. On the crest of evening the score at
7-7, or at least closing the deficit to 7-3, Permian's nightmare would
begin. On 3rd-and-7, Panther QB David Durell rolled to the right
and wobbled a pass on an apparent busted option play. Copperas
Cove’s Allen Flower was there to intercept the pass and trucked 93 yards
up the Cove sideline for a touchdown, increasing the Cove lead to 14-0.
The Bulldogs tacked on their third score before the half, as Nick
Foreman bulled in from the 2yd line, capping off the 68-yard in nine
play drive.
On Permian’s third possession of the second half, the Panthers faced
a 4th-and-5 on the Copperas Cove 32. Permian's Durell connected
with receiver Decobian Williams in the back of the end zone. After
the ensuing kickoff, the Panther defense forced a three-and-out.
On Permian's next possession, Colby Williams pounded in from the 6-yd
line, cutting the Bulldawg lead to 21-13. The extra point failed,
and Cove still sat on an eight point lead.
The Panthers got the ball back for one
last-ditch effort on a 14-yard fumble return by Brandon Hillin to the
Copperas Cove 40. Five plays later, the Panthers had time
for one more play from the 26 but cornerback Allen Flower intercepted
David Durell's pass in the end zone to save the victory. [
