| SAN ANTONIO -- It took most of the first half for the Lee
Rebels to get in groove, but when the second half was over Midland Lee and Cedric Benson
had dismantled the Vipers, 40-12 at the Alamodome Saturday night in the season opener for
both teams. For Memorial, the game was the first game ever as a school, for Lee, it
was their 24th consecutive victory and 17th consecutive game where the Rebels have scored
30 or more points. Lee quarterback Nick Hand started the game off
with a 22-yard pass to Eric Winston, followed by Cedric Benson busting a 52-yard TD run on
just his third carry of the game for a quick 7-0 Lee lead. Victoria quarterback
Grant Rybak hit Mychal Hamilton with a 10-yard scoring play. Two field goals by
Viper kicker Danny Garcia of 29 yards and 23 yards closed the score to 13-12 lead for Lee
at the half.
But Lee put the game out of reach quickly in the second
half on huge punt returns by Jenard Lee and Pete Bryant. First, Lee returned a Viper punt
42 yards for a touchdown and Pete Bryant had a 50-yard return to the Memorial 5, which led
to another score.
The Lee defense didn't allow any second half points thanks
in part to Lee's defensive end Dwight Washington, who turned in several quarterback
hurries and sacks.
