FOSSIL RIDGE IN WAY OF
LEE'S FOUR-PEAT?
DECEMBER 1, 2001
KELLER
– The Midland Lee Rebels are only three games away from winning a state record
four-straight Texas Bowl Championships. Round 3 of the state playoff matches Midland
Lee with Keller Fossil Ridge, who came back from a 17-13 halftime
deficit to Arlington and posted a 33-17 victory last Saturday.
Midland Lee avenged a 21-7 loss to El Paso Franklin earlier in the
season with a
25-0 shutout in El Paso's Sun Bowl this past weekend. It's the Fossil
Ridge Panthers that will try to scrub Lee's quest for a four-peat.
Standout lineman Freddie Ortega,
defensive end Jermial Ashley (6'6" 230), middle linebacker Robert
Latu (6'-3 225), strongside linebacker
Drew Ribinskas, and weakside linebacker Richard Perez (6'0" 225)
have combined for over 200 tackles and 17 quarterback hurries, including
forcing nine interceptions. Offensively, the Panthers returned
seven starters at the beginning of this season. Linemen
Justin Carson (left tackle), Jeff Downs (left
guard), Greg Holman (right tackle), Josh Paradise (right guard) and Josh
Parker (center) have given QB
Zac Dahman (pictured, above) lots of protection - to the tune
of over 2800 passing yards, while Clint Baily and Brock Springer
have churned carries into yardage on the ground. Dahman's
receiving corp of Eric Walz (61 catches for
1,283 yards),
Michael DePriest (45 catches for 1,043 yards), and Baily will test the Rebel
secondary early. Plan on seeing the ball in the air a lot.
This is the deepest Fossil Ridge has
been in the playoffs in its five-year history.
Coach
John Parchman (pictured, right) and Midland Lee have been
here the last three seasons, which all ended in state champion titles.
While the Panthers throw a lot, the Rebels have
made most of their yardage running the ball. The tailback
tandem of Freddie Jones and Jacobe Kendrick have the capacity to explode
on any opponent, inside and outside. The Lee defense had eight
sacks alone in the game against EP Franklin. Expect a lot of blitzing
from Eric Winston, Tim Norman, and Michael Skinner.
