The Cooper Cougars will return eight starters
(4-4) and have 25 lettermen returning for 2001. Last year, the Cougars made it to
the state quarterfinals before losing to Arlington Lamar in the second overtime.
David Butler will replace Jordan Neal at QB. The receivers are potent, as well as
Brandon Diles in the backfield. On defense, Cooper will have a good size line
and the secondary will be tough to pass on.The
3-peat Lee Rebels return eight starts on
offense and four on defense. This team could contend, even with the absence of
Cedric Benson. The Rebs will rely on Jacoby Kendrick to fill those shoes.
Good offensive line, with TE Eric Winston able to catch and block. The veteran
secondary will complement the defense. Winston could also see time at defensive end.
The Permian
Panthers lost several starters, but the upcoming group looked very impressive in the
black-white game. QB David Durell can throw the ball, with Jayson Dorman able to run
and/or catch and T.J. Sparks fitting nicely at fullback. The offensive and defensive
lines look crisp and hungry. The Panthers have an outstanding group of defensive
backs and bandits. Expect Sparks to double at linebacker beside Blake Ellison and
Elliott Jackson.
The Abilene
Eagles will return nine starters (4-5). Their strength will be on the defensive
line and linebacking. Odessa Bronchos
return 10 starters (6-4). Good offensive line, while linebackers highlight the
defense. Midland Bulldogs only return
four starters (1-3). The Dawgs will try to rebuild an offense around RB T.J. Barber
and QB Ryan Rowland. Linebackers will carry most of the load on defense.
Midland will still have the services of kicker/punter James Gripp.
