It's not often you hear
of the Little Southwest Conference having all but one of its teams
collecting losses to non-district opponents in any given week.
By the end of Friday night, every District 3-5A team found themselves
on the short end of the scoreboard except for the Midland Bulldogs.
Midland High 41, San
Angelo Central 10
The Bulldogs scored on each of their first five possessions
en route to a 41-10 victory over the San Angelo Bobcats. Brandon
Batch struck first on a 69-yard touchdown run for the Bulldogs.
Two Brandon O'Connor field goals gave MHS an early 13-0 lead.
John Burns connected with Nathan Petraitis on a 24-yard scoring
strike and then found Steven Cobb on a 51-yd touchdown pass to
put the Bulldogs up 27-0. The Bobcats finally got on the
board on a 1-yard run by Ryan Steinbrunner narrowing the gap to
27-7 at the half. MHS added a Kyle Pearce 7-yd TD run and
the defense recovered a San Angelo fumble in the end zone.
The Bobcats managed a 24-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Burns completed 9-of-17 passes for 127 yards and Batch had his
third straight 100-yard rushing game with 105 yards on 10
carries.
Lubbock Monterey 24,
Midland Lee 10
The Plainsmen got on the
board first on a 32-yard touchdown run by
Cody Hill and a 36-yard pass from quarterback Joel Lira to Michael
Henderson to end the first quarter. Lee's lone touchdown
came in the second quarter on a 1-yard run from Jasper McKee. Both
teams added a field goal each and Lubbock Monterey held a 17-10 advantage at
halftime. The Rebels allowed Monterey to score another seven points in
the third quarter, increasing the margin to 14 points. Rebel
quarterback Corey
Petro finished 10 for 20 in the passing department for 150 yards and added
another 25 yards rushing.
Euless Trinity 40,
Odessa Permian 14
After
the MojoLand site was hacked on Wednesday, this is a difficult summary
to approach objectively. But, I will give it a shot. Permian's second road trip landed
in Bedford's Pennington Field against
returning state champion Euless
Trinity. The Trojans scored on their first four possessions and took a
26-0 halftime lead over the Panthers. The second half told a different
story. Both teams scored 14 points and Permian refused to give up.
The score ended 40-14 with Trinity having 361 total yards to Mojo's 239
yards. Trinity's Shannon Moore ran for 218 yards against Tyler Lee,
but the PHS defense held Moore and Justise Campbell to 114 yards combined.
Mesquite 35, Abilene
High 20
The Eagles took a 20-7 lead, but Mesquite scored four unanswered touchdowns
and shut Abilene out in the second half to win 35-20. AHS took control
of the game early on a Brandon Williams two-yard touchdown run. Spens
Lackey scored on a two-yard run of his own to increase the score to 14-0.
Mesquite got on the board on a Kelly Page 36-yard touchdown pass. Each
team traded touchdowns on their next series. The Eagles appeared to be
headed to the locker room with a 20-14 lead, but Mesquite’s Page found Krys
Buerck in the end zone with 23 seconds remaining to give Mesquite a
one-point lead at the break. The Skeeters were able to score another
touchdown near the end of the third quarter to go ahead 28-20. With
less than three minutes left in the game, Page broke a 57-yard touchdown run
down the right sideline to put them game away.
Amarillo Tascosa 17, Odessa High 7
The Bronchos came out and scored on their opening possession,
after David Camacho took a 6-yard option to paydirt. Unfortunately for
Odessa High, that would be the only points they would put on the scoreboard.
Amarillo Tascosa running back Anthony Scott found the end zone on a short
run to tie the score early in the second quarter. Jason Cunningham's
37-yard field goal would put the Rebels up 10-7 at the half. Scott
busted loose on a 26-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to extend
the Tascosa lead to 17-7. Scott would finish the game with 118 yards
on 24 carries for the Rebels. Camacho led the Bronchos with 47 yards
rushing and 60 yards through the air.
Temple 26, Abilene Cooper 14
Repeated
penalties and turnovers cost Cooper a 26-14 loss to Temple in the first road
game of the 2006 season. Zach Stewart had 331 yards on 21 of 33
passes, including the two touchdowns. The Coogs will now travel to San Angelo on
a Thursday night game to face the Bobcats.
