CLEAN SWEEP FOR MONTEREY
Plainsman knock off yet another 3-5A team

By far, this week's Game of the Week for West Texas and the Panhandle came from Lubbock as Monterey handed Permian a 31-28 loss.  The Panthers join Abilene High (42-16), Midland Lee (24-10) and Midland (38-24) on the Plainsmen trophy shelf of 2006.  Mojo led at the half 28-21, but failed to mount any serious threat after two turnovers in the second half.  VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

ABILENE 30, DENTON RYAN 21
The Eagles scored 13 points on three of Denton Ryan’s four turnovers to earn their first win of the year.  Junior Ortegon forced two of those turnovers, returning a fumble for a touchdown early in the third quarter and intercepting the Raiders’ final pass in the red zone with 1:04 remaining.

ABILENE COOPER 61, LUBBOCK CORONADO 33
Cooper quarterback Zach Stewart set the school’s all-time record for passing yards in a game. Stewart finished the night 29-of-45 for 453 yards and five touchdowns, as the Cougars stormed the Mustangs, 61-33.  After watching Coronado score the first points of the game, Cooper responded with a barrage of touchdowns – the last score of the half coming on a drive that took just four plays and 36 seconds to cover 86 yards – and went into the locker room up 41-14.

The Bobcats came out firing on Blake McCarthy's 80-yard touchdown run just 1:59 into the game.  The Central defense dominated the first three quarters, holding the Bronchos to just three total yards.

MIDLAND HIGH 13, AMARILLO HIGH 10
It came down to a final possession of a defensive struggle with the game tied.  Bulldogs kicker Brandon O'Connor nailed a 36-yard field goal to give Midland High a 13-10 victory over the Sandies in Bivins Stadium in Amarillo.  Midland's game-winning drive started as a result of Sandie Brett Owens' 46-yard field goal attempt falling short with just over two minutes left in the game.

MESQUITE 31, MIDLAND LEE 7
The Skeeters scored 28 first-half points on the way to a 31-7 blowout of the Rebels at Abilene's Shotwell Stadium.  Lee's Corey Petro left the game early in the third quarter with a hand injury after rushing for 42 yards and throwing for 28.  Jason Nash came in as relief and completed 9 of 19 passes for 110 yards and throwing the Rebels' only touchdown pass to Desmond Jackson.
