REBELS START SWEEP
WITH 37-30 WIN OVER ELKS
The scoring explosion began
when Lee's Jason Nash connected with Bryan Edgerton on a 17-yard
scoring strike early in the first quarter. After a Burleson
turnover on the ensuing kickoff, the Rebels struck again 23 seconds
later on a 1-yard dive by Josey Childs. Nash fired a 54-yard
aerial assault to Corey Petro to give Midland Lee a 21-0 lead.
Burleson finally salvaged something from the first quarter when
Anthony Cook’s 30-yard field goal gave the Elks their first points
of the game. Midland Lee ran out to the 31-3 halftime lead
when Petro grabbed his second TD pass on a 10-yard strike from Nash.
Burleson stormed back
to score 27 points in the second half behind a pair of touchdown
runs by Michael Stane, but Lee’s Amieul Carr sealed the win with a
third-quarter 11-yard run. Burleson scored twice in the final
period, but Lee hung on to advance to the area round against Lubbock
Monterey at Grande in a rematch from earlier in the season.

PANTHER DEFENSE
ANSWERS JAGUAR CALL IN 45-31 WIN
Going into the game, Permian
knew they had a major chore - keep Mansfield Summit quarterback John Chiles in
check. Mission accomplished. Chiles was ineffective
against the Mojo swarm tackling and smash-mouth defensive style, as
he finished the game with 135 yards passing and 40 yards rushing.
The Panthers finished with 565 total yards and got touchdowns from
five different players.
An interception on
the second play of the game set up a Mansfield field goal, but
holding the Jaguars out of the end zone wound up being a spark for
the Permian. Permian responded with an eight yard TD strike from
Tate Smith to Lavorick Williams late in the first quarter.
They followed that with 17 unanswered second quarter points to
possess a 24-3 halftime lead. The Panthers and Jaguars traded
scores in the third quarter, which had Summit trailing 38-24.
Each would score one more time in the last period, giving Mojo the
victory. Bront Bird had five catches for 96 yards and two
scores. Robert Murry had a 20-yard touchdown run in the second
quarter. He also returned an interception 59 yards just before
halftime. Permian will advance to the area round against San
Angelo Central, who defeated El Paso Montwood 16-14.

EAGLES ROLL TO
33-0 BLANKING OF KANGAROOS
The Kangaroos never got
within 30 yards of the end zone and Abilene came up with a 33-0
victory in the Bi-District match-up. The Eagles also forced
five turnovers that led to 23 offensive points. Despite having
more than three times as many total yards as Weatherford late in the
first half, the Eagles had only two field goals by Brandon Hill to
show for it. A 20-yard pass from Spens Lackey to Bryson Walker
put the Eagles on the 2-yard line, and Garrison Hardin punched the
ball into the end zone from a yard out two plays later to give AHS a
13-0 lead. The Eagles out-gained the Kangaroos 193 yards to 49
in the first half.
The momentum stayed
with AHS once the teams came out of the locker room. The Eagles
opened the third quarter with a six-play, 81-yard drive that ended
with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Lackey to Keithy Flye.
The junior running back added a 4-yard touchdown run early in the
fourth quarter after AHS took over following Polaris Haynes’
interception. The Eagles scored one more touchdown when
Stephen Warren connected on a 20-yard screen down the left sideline
to Troy Tarrant midway through the fourth quarter. Flye led
the way for AHS with 95 yards rushing, 38 yards receiving and two
second-half touchdowns.

BULLDOGS RALLY TO
26-22 VICTORY OVER WOLVES
Two inches. That's
approximately what separated Timberview from a converted fourth down
in the third quarter, and they were looking at it from Midland's
3-yard line. The Wolves lined up in the shotgun and Antoine
Hicks handed off to DeMar Byrd. But the Wolves came up short.
And for the rest of the game, Midland came up big. Brandon
Batch ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns, including one that was
the eventual game winner, as Midland beat Timberview 26-22.
Midland scored a
touchdown on their first drive of the second half, thanks to Kyle
Pearce's 5-yard run, that narrowed Timberview's lead to 22-19.
The Bulldogs answered with Batch's 1-yard touchdown to take their
first lead of the game at 26-22, with 9:23 remaining. DeMar
Byrd finished off the afternoon rushing for 203 yards and two TDs.
Jay Tolliver rushed for 105 yards on 10 carries.
