District 3-5A Week Six

MIDLAND LEE AT ODESSA PERMIAN
GAME SUMMARY & STATS
Permian converted two big Lee mistakes into touchdowns, and the Rebels were flagged 16 times for 95 yards in a 31-7 district opening loss to the Panthers at Ratliff Stadium.

The Rebels held Permian to a scoreless tie through the first quarter, only the second period of the season in which the Panthers failed to put points on the board. Things changed quickly in the second quarter as Jamison Berryhill ignited a 13-play scoring drive that resulted in a 3-yard score by Taylor Byrd.  Berryhill then made quick work of the next series, racing 39 yards to score on the first play.  Byrd also had a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. He finished with 81 yards on 17 carries and was 8-of-15 passing for 86 yards as the Panthers finished with 327 total yards.

Berryhill became Permian’s first 100-yard rusher this season, gaining 116 yards on 10 carries, and joined Byrd in scoring two touchdowns as the Panthers improved to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district.  Permian’s defense continued it’s run of forcing turnovers, getting interceptions from Jerome Leija and Cameron Phillips and a fumble recovery by Cori Branscum.

Lee gained 284 total yards, but didn’t get on the board until the final minute when Jason Nash connected with Dylan Smith from 12 yards out.  The Rebels were flagged 16 times for 95 yards, including 12 times for 65 yards in the first half.

ABILENE HIGH AT MIDLAND HIGH
Abilene's Spens Lackey had another strong game, completing 11 of 14 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers - Kortney McDow, Tevin Wiley and Ben Wadsworth. He also ran 13 yards for another score as the Eagles knocked off Midland High, 45-17.

AHS took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards in four plays with the Lackey-to-McDow touchdown pass capping the drive.  Keith Carroll's fumble recovery at the Bulldogs' 33 set up a 25-yard field goal by Brandon Hill. Lackey to Wiley made the score 17-0.

After Clayton Othold kicked a 29-yard field goal to get Midland on the board in the first quarter, the Eagles turned three second-quarter possessions into scores. Warren connected with McDow for a 19-yard scoring play, Lackey scored on a 13-yard keeper and Warren clicked with James on a 14-yard scoring play as AHS took a commanding 38-10 halftime lead.  The Eagles scored on their opening drive of the second half on Lackey's 9-yard TD pass to Wadsworth to cap the AHS scoring.

ODESSA HIGH AT ABILENE COOPER
Scoring 17 points in the first half, Cooper hung on for a 17-10 victory over Odessa High in their district opener at Shotwell Stadium.

The Cougar defense forced Odessa to punt after just three plays and, after a pass interference call that moved Cooper up to the Bronchos' 28, Isaac Escobedo hit a 39-yard field goal, just bouncing in after hitting the bottom of the left goal post.  Micah Haile intercepted a pass inside the red zone when the Bronchos were threatening to pull to 17-10.
