District 3-5A: Week
Thirteen

ABILENE HIGH AT SOUTHLAKE CARROLL
With Riley Dodge running the Carroll spread offense to perfection, the Dragons raced in front 14-3 over the Abilene Eagles.  AHS refused to give up and rallied in the second half to claim a 22-21 victory in the Class 5A Division II tourney.

Dodge, who was 8-for-8 for 126 yards before getting injured in the second quarter,  connected with Ethan Cunningham for a 7-yard touchdown.  It made the score 14-3, and went down as Dodge's last play of his high school career.

With junior Kyle Padron at the helm, the Dragons mounted an 83-yard scoring drive in the second-half to forge a 21-9 lead.  AHS responded with a 69-yard drive, highlighted by Keithy Flye's 43-yard scamper, but it stalled at the 11. Brandon Hill booted a 28-yard field goal.  On its next possession, AHS drove down to the 5-yard line and Hill came in to kick a 22-yarder to slice the AHS deficit to 21-15.

In the fourth quarter, Spens Lackey simply took over the game at that point by carrying the ball on seven of eight plays.  His seventh carry was a 1-yard sneak into the end zone with 6:41 left.  Hill put the Eagles ahead 22-21.  Carroll seemed poised for an easy game-winning field goal, but on the second play the snap was mishandled and Abilene's  P.J. Butler fell on the ball at the Carroll 8.  The Eagles ran out the clock and advance to the state quarterfinal round.

ODESSA PERMIAN AT EULESS TRINITY
SUMMARY & STATS    GAME PHOTOS
Going into the Regional Finals of the Class 5A state playoffs, Euless Trinity possessed a record of 11-1.  That lone loss came from a 30-3 shellacking administered by Permian in the third week of the season.  On Saturday the Trojans returned the favor in a 38-14 elimination of the Panthers.  The loss will go in the books as the only blemish on the 2007 Permian campaign.

The Trojans, who have pitched five shutouts this season, held Permian to just 274 yards of offense.  The Panthers took their only lead at the end of the first quarter.  Taylor Byrd went in from one yard, which took eight plays for the 7-3 lead.  It was short-lived, as Denarius McGhee ran a 52-yard keeper two minutes later, starting a streak of 35 unanswered Trinity points.

It seemed the Mojo offense never got in sync until midway through the fourth quarter, when Joseph Knighten broke free on a 28 touchdown pass from Byrd.  The senior quarterback finished 11-of-27 passing for 126 yards, with 49 rushing yards on 15 carries. Melvis Pride had seven receptions for 76 yards. Jamison Berryhill added 52 rushing yards on seven carries.

Trojan running back Samir Baker rushed for 254 yards, while McGhee threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third to give Trinity the victory.
