LUBBOCK, TX --
Abilene High held Lubbock Monterey to four first downs in the first
half, while quarterback Marcus Johnson and Jerale Badon cranked it up
with their air attack in the Eagles' 21-14 victory over Lubbock
Monterey Friday night at Lowrey Field.
Abilene High had
touchdown drives of 80, 53 and 41 yards. The Eagles drew first
blood after marching the ball the length of the field, capped off by
Johnson's five yard burst into the end zone. Monterey’s first
score came when Tucker Brown blocked an Abilene High punt, and
teammate Ty Byrd pounced on the ball for a touchdown with 1:14 left in
the first quarter, as the Plainsmen tied it at 7-7. The Eagles
answered back with a pair of second-quarter touchdowns for a 21-7
halftime edge. Johnson threw a 16-yard strike in the end zone to
Andre Washington at the 6:01 mark, and Tavares Sharp added a 1-yard
run with 33 seconds left in the half.
AHS gained a 21-7
lead by halftime, and the Eagles’ defense did not allow an offensive
touchdown until the Plainsmen scored with 1:36 left in the contest.
The Plainsmen recovered an Eagle fumble at the AHS 24-yard line, and
drove for their only offensive touchdown, capped by a one-yard
touchdown run by Blake Johnston.
Abilene's Johnson
passed for 212 yards and Badon caught seven passes for 137 yards,
while running back Juan Gallow had 141 yards on 18 carries.
