SEPTEMBER 13, 2002
MESQUITE,
TX
— Duncanville, Grand Prairie, and now
Mesquite can be added to the Cooper list of Metroplex victims of 2002.
The solid performance of the Cougars in Hanby Stadium resulted in
21-10 victory Friday night.
The win extended Cooper's win streak to
three games. The Skeeters loaded up in their defensive front and
held running back Brandon Diles, who had rushed for 291 yards in
Cooper's first two games, to 48 yards. QB Will Galusha made Mesquite
pay for that strategy by hitting the Skeeters for several big plays,
including three touchdown passes. Galusha finished the game with
189 yards passing and 75 yards rushing. Cooper also received a
standout performance from its defense, which turned back Mesquite five
times inside its 50-yard line. Four of those stops came in the first
half when Cooper held the Skeeters to a 31-yard field goal by Cory
Mangum and took a 14-3 lead.
One of the important stops Cooper made
came in the fourth quarter. The Skeeters drove to Cooper's
21-yard line, but were turned away when Cooper defensive back Desmond
Jackson blocked a 38-yard field goal attempt by Mangum to secure the
win with 3:52 left to ice Cooper's win.
