BRONCHOS FASTER THAN STEERS

AUGUST 31, 2002
ODESSA
, TX -- The Odessa High Bronchos had all the breaks Friday night, beating the Big Spring Steers 21-0 in Ratliff Stadium.  Big Spring's Brandon Mendoza led the Steers in receiving with 73 yards on eight catches.

Steer's quarterback Tye Butler was never able to get in a rhythm, as he went 13-for-26 for 121 yards, while throwing three interceptions.  Butler also was sacked four times by the Bronchos, with defensive end Jason Carrillo getting two of them.  The first half was a turnover fest, as the Steers and Bronchos combined for five.  Broncho quarterback Justin Casas ran 49 yards off right tackle on the first play from scrimmage.  But Casas fumbled on the next play, with Tim Overton recovering for the Steers.  Casas’ second turnover was an interception, as Eric Chavez intercepted a pass intended for Brad Fox at the Steer 15-yard-line and returned it 21 yards.  Ramone Ford added an interception in the second quarter off Kale Kirkpatrick.

The defense led to OHS’ only score of the half, as Carrillo sacked Butler at the Big Spring 18, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Oscar Alvarez.
OHS capitalized three plays later, as Slack received an option pitch from Casas at the right hashmark and dashed 14 yards into the end zone to put OHS up 7-0 with 11:29 left in the half.  The Steers were happy with their bend-but-don’t break defense, as 275 OHS yards only led to a 7-0 lead at halftime.

While Big Spring missed its opportunity in the second half, OHS took advantage and put the game out of reach.  After seeing their first nine passes go incomplete, the Bronchos went up top for their second touchdown, as Brad Fox pulled in a 55-yard pass from Casas with 1:29 left in the third to give OHS a 14-0 advantage.  OHS stayed on the ground for its third and final touchdown drive, going 64 yards on six plays. Junior fullback Shawn Simons busted a 39-yard run on the first play and Casas scampered 24 yards to the Big Spring 1-yard line to set up sophomore fullback Trent Golden, who dove in the end zone with 3:40 left.
