ODESSA,
TX --
Under an uncompromising West Texas sun,
the solid black clad Permian Panthers braved the 100° heat in its
scrimmage against Lubbock Coronado Saturday afternoon at Ratliff
Stadium. Defensively, the Mojo looked to be ready for next
week's awaited opener against Copperas Cove in the Texas Football
Classic in the Alamojodome.
Junior defensive tackle Cedric Thomas had two early sacks, setting the
tone for a shutout by the Panthers’ first-team defense.
Permian’s first-team defense allowed just 166 yards in 41 plays, with
55 of those yards coming on one running play five plays into the
scrimmage. The Panthers also came up with an impressive
goal-line stand during Coronado’s second series, recovered two fumbles
and had an interception that would have been returned for a touchdown,
but the play was stopped by the coaches.
On the offensive side of the ball,
Permian has six days to fine-tune its execution. Permian’s
first-team offense was only able to collect 216 yards. The
Panthers were able to score (but were called back) on two efforts from
David Durell to Adam Podzemny, including a touchdown pass of 46 yards.
Durell was 7-of-17 for 85 yards passing, and added 57 yards rushing.
Tailback Jon McDowell carried 16 times for 67 yards. Podzemny
switched from receiver to quarterback. The sophomore produced a
10-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard fade route into the
right corner of the end zone to Drew Peterson.
