SIMPLY OVERPOWERED
The annual cross-town rivalry game witnessed
Permian jumping out to a 21-7 lead in the first quarter, with two of the
scores from quarterback Taylor Byrd. Mojo added another 21 points in the
second period. Joseph Knighten ended the scoring with a 29-yard pass
from Taylor Byrd to make the score 42-7 at the half. The second
half wasn't much better for the Bronchos as they fell 49-13.

TURNOVERS SPELL DOOM
Lee entered the game with Odessa High, needing something to
stabilize the rollercoaster season. The Rebs got on track in the
third quarter with a barrage of four touchdowns en route to a 51-14
domination of the Bronchos. Adam Votaw and Kyle Logsdon forced a
fumble and Casey Forga nabbed the ball and returned it 62 yards for a
touchdown to give the Rebels a 23-14 advantage - the blow-out began.
Lee finished with 209 yards on the ground and 116 through the air,
despite throwing just 12 passes all evening.

TEEGARDEN RECOGNIZED
Alltel
Wireless has
announced this week’s “Yards 4 Youth
Football Player of the Week”!
Quarterback
Derrick Teegarden
earned the player award
by gaining 150 yards of offense in
the Bronchos’ 15-14 win over Midland High on October 19. This
award goes to the Little Southwest Conference player which gains the
most offensive yards. On behalf of Teegarden, Alltel will donate $500
to the Central Permian Basin Youth Athletic Association.

AUSTIN BOOSTS 15-14
VICTORY
The Bronchos came out of
the locker room trailing 14-12 at halftime. Odessa High mounted a drive
in the second half and moved down the field, but eventually was forced into a
third-and-30 at Midland High's 37. Travis Austin nailed a 37-yarder for
his third successful kick of the game, which proved to be the
game-winning points and 15-14 victory. OHS is now 1-1 in district
and will host the Lee Rebels on Oct 26.

COMEBACK FAILS IN 17-10 LOSS
Scoring 17 points in the
first half, Cooper hung on for a 17-10 victory over Odessa High in their
district opener at Shotwell Stadium. The Cougar defense forced Odessa
to punt after just three plays and, after a pass interference call that
moved Cooper up to the Bronchos' 28, Isaac Escobedo hit a 39-yard field
goal, just bouncing in after hitting the bottom of the left goal post.
Micah Haile intercepted a pass inside the red zone when the Bronchos were
threatening to pull to 17-10.

COME ON RED!
The Bronchos didn't get on the
scoreboard until the final play of the
first half on a Travis Austin 48-yard
field goal. Unfortunately for
Odessa High, the Bobcats put up 20
points in the 20-5 loss to San Angelo
Central. Just one week after
gaining nearly 500 yards in offense, OHS
could manage only 179. Running
back J.J. Hill was the workhorse,
finishing with 57 yards on 14 carries.
Central quarterback Anthony Castillo,
who rushed 20 times for 62 yards,
including several big plays to extend
drives. He also was 9-of-18 for 89 yards
passing, with one touchdown. |

MUSTANGS OUTRUN BRONCS
Coronado got on the board with a 27
field goal, a 19 yard TD pass and then a
60 touchdown run to take a 16-0 lead
into the second quarter. The
Mustangs had a 23 point lead until OHS's
Derrick Teegarden found Miles Torres on
a 9-yard scoring toss. The
Bronchos trailed 23-7 at the half.
Torres continued to find the end
zone, this time on a 22-yard TD pass
from David Camacho. Coronado
answered with 10 points early in the
fourth quarter to put the game out of
reach. Teegarden took the Bronchos
down the field and scored one last time
in the 33-20 loss. |

SOPHOMORE BLASTS STEERS
Derrick Teegarden led the Bronchos to a 41-6 victory after taking
over for starting quarterback David Camacho in Ratliff Stadium.
Camacho got injured early in the game when was slammed to the turf with
three minutes to play in the first quarter. Teegarden directed the
Bronchos to three first-half scores and four more in the second half.
The sophomore quarterback finished the night 14-of-21 passing for 197
yards and two passing touchdowns and added a 10-yard touchdown run late
in the fourth quarter. Miles Torres caught six passes for 113
yards. Felix Neboh caught three passes for 54 yards, with Javorian
Guyton adding two receptions for 23 yards. Running back J.J. Hill
carried the ball 12 times for 57 yards to lead the rushing for the
Bronchos. The OHS defense limited the Steers to a negative four
yards in total offense in the first half and 94 yards for the game. |

SCRIMMAGE WITH MONTEREY
The Broncho
offense put ball in the end zone six
times against the Lubbock Monterey
Plainsmen. The first four
touchdowns came in the controlled
portion of the scrimmage and then the
final two came in the final minute of a
live half. Junior kicker Travis Austin
also connected on a 40-yard field goal.
OHS came out ahead 15-14 for the night.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LEAVES
As
ECISD’s athletic director, Gary Gaines
has hired coaches who have brought
success to a wide variety of the
district’s athletic teams. Gaines is
moving on to a new challenge, having
accepted the position as Lubbock
Independent School District’s executive
director of athletics. "I'm sad to see
Coach Gaines leave us,” said
Superintendent of Schools Wendell Sollis.
“1 enjoyed working with such a quality
person. He has done a great job hiring
coaches and building our entire athletic
department. We wish him all the best; we
will definitely miss him.” Gaines
was hired as ECISD’s Executive Director
of Athletics in January
2005. |
