MULLEN,
NEBRASKA
Mike Brown has put in 28 years coaching the eight-man football
team at Mullen High School in Nebraska. The team record in his
tenure stands at 210-75. Mullen has won state titles in 1990 and
1998. Brown has helped build a strong tradition at the school.
Dan Brost has been an assistant on the staff for 27 years. The
community of Mullen has 500 people. That's not exactly a huge
area to draw from, but it also helps build a very loyal following.
Brown, who has coached junior high football and basketball, also
coaches varsity golf in the spring.

GARLAND,
UTAH
Bear River has made the Utah state high school playoffs for 26
straight years. Head coach Chris Wise does plan on ending that
streak anytime soon. His program remains one of the most
successful across the state, and it's enjoyed a long and proud
tradition. In 2003, the school was 12-1 and won a state title.
They did it again in 2004 with a 13-0 record. With 1,200
students in grades 9-12, Wise and members of his coaching staff have
coached or played in a combination of 15 state championship games.

INDEPENDENCE,
NORTH CAROLINA
There are
dominant teams, and there are dynasties. The Patriots have not only won seven consecutive state titles, but
their 108-game winning streak is believed to be the longest among
public schools in the United States. Coach Tommy Knott hopes to break the all-time record of 151,
held by California private school powerhouse De La Salle. Though
several of its players have earned major Division I college
scholarships, none have landed in the NFL during Knott's tenure.

PAHOKEE,
FLORIDA
In an
agricultural town of 6,554 people that is famous for its sugar cane,
the success of the football team is a sweet source of pride for Leroy
Foster and the Pahokee Blue Devils. Foster has directed the Blue
Devils to Class 2B state championships in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
His record sits at an impressive 60-4 mark. When Foster arrived
at Pahokee, the team was perennially strong, but not dominant. Foster
has coached the Blue Devils into at least the state semifinals in all
five seasons since he arrived. They lost in the semis his first year,
then won the state championship the next two before falling in the
title game in 2005 to Trinity Catholic. They avenged that defeat in
the 2006 finals. |
